Question:  How can getting just 3 pieces out of the frame take 21 moves to get just the first piece out?
Answer: When it's designed by Stéphane Chomine.
The ends of the pieces are designed in such a way that when they are inside the frame they spell the word HALT around the 4 sides.  But don't let that stop you from having a go at this one.

Edward Hordern IPP Puzzle Exchange - Washington DC, August 2012

Only 200 of these puzzles ever made. 100 sent to IPP32 for the Edward Hordern Puzzle Exchange. 100 for sale exclusively on this website.
ONLY 12 left!

The puzzle is to assemble the 6 pieces so that you make what looks like a framed burr. The Vice comes in two pieces and then the 4 other pieces intersect in two directions through it.   We've presented the puzzle disassembled which raises the difficulty level. Whilst at the same time being just 6 pieces the challenge to solve is not unrealistic. Nevertheless it will be hard to do without resorting to the solution.

Coaxial unique solution 160 false assemblies Coaxial unique solution 160 false assemblies Out of Stock

First appearance it seems like a 3 piece framed burr.  But the puzzle is actually a high level 6 piece burr and what appears to be the frame is actually 3 pieces, with another 3 pieces inside.
There is just one solution to this level 17.2.2.2.3 burr.  Another very hard puzzle design just as we've come to expect from Stéphane Chomine.

Lancelot high level 13.3.12.5 burr Lancelot high level 13.3.12.5 burr Out of Stock

The level 13.3.12.5 solution means that it will take 13 moves to remove the first piece then another 3 to remove the second piece then 12 more to remove the third and still 5 more to remove the fourth piece.  Considering there's only 6 pieces (although some are quite complex shapes) this is really amazing.
Designed in 2012 by Stephane ChomineThis puzzle is made in the Pelikan workshop using combinations of either 1.Wenge (black wood) and Mapel (white wood) or 2.Padauk (red wood) and Mapel (white wood).

Simple Sharp 4 piece interlocking burr Simple Sharp 4 piece interlocking burr Out of Stock

The puzzle is to take apart and reassemble the puzzle.

Designed in 2013 by Stéphane Chomine.
The level 13.3.5 solution means that it will take 13 moves to remove the first piece then another 3 to remove the second piece and still 5 more to separate the third and second last piece.  Consider that at this point there would only be 2 pieces left in the puzzle;  to need 5 moves to separate them in quite an ingenious design.

This puzzle is made in the Pelikan workshop using American Walnut wood.
