Mr Puzzle - We've got puzzles!

vincubevincosmall.jpgSome interlocking puzzles just cannot be described as Burr puzzles.   These are not always wooden puzzles;  interlocking puzzles are sometimes part of the metal puzzle type as well. They may be Figures or Geometric shapes like the interlocking wooden puzzle of a wine glass or Vinco's intriguing interlocking wooden puzzles which are as difficult to take apart as they are to put together.  This puzzle section has everything from very hard puzzles like the level genius puzzle called Porcupine from Family Games to easy puzzles (well, maybe not that easy) like the Lady Sculpture interlocking wooden, from interesting new brain teaser designs like the pewter interlocking puzzle of a platypus to age old traditional puzzles like the cube puzzle we all know.

Pelikan Egg wooden interlocking puzzle on Stand

Pelikan Egg wooden interlocking puzzle on Stand

An ingenious 4 piece interlocking egg puzzle on a turned wooden stand designed in 2007 by Jaroslav Svejkovski.   Whilst this is not considered an extremely difficult puzzle, it may prove to be more difficult to get apart than to put together.  The pieces are each made from many smaller complex shaped pieces glued together; finding the correct combination that are not glued, to push or pull to take apart, is very important.

Once you take this puzzle apart you will need to fit the 4 pieces back together paying attention to forming the smooth surface of the egg.  Because these puzzles are hand turned and finished there is only one solution.  There may be a number of different assemblies but for the finished puzzle to exactly as it was made you must assemble it correctly.

A great long lasting Easter present for a puzzler instead of too much chocolate.

The Pelikan workshop uses a selection of both European woods including  maple, walnut, birch, ash, apple, pear, cherry, oak, beech, plum, and acacia as well as some more exotic woods like mahogany, ebony, begging, wenge, walnut, American, padank, rosewood, amaranth, Bubinga, owango, jarah, meranti, and iroko.  Each piece of the puzzle is very precisely made from many smaller complex shaped pieces glued together.  The pieces are then fitted together with very fine tolerances before being put on a lathe and turned; therefore it is possible that they could be affected by very humid environments. To protect each puzzle against changing conditions they are stored and shipped in the original airtight ziplock bag they were put in in the Pelikan factory.

OSM Ball wooden interlocking puzzle on Stand

OSM Ball wooden interlocking puzzle on Stand

osm is the Czech word for 8.  An 8 piece interlocking wooden ball puzzle on a turned wooden stand which will really challenge your dexterity skills.

Adapted from the cube shaped Bar Puzzle designed by Leonid Mochalov (a prolific Russian puzzle designer in his own right) by Jakub Dvorak in 2008, this complex interlocking puzzle is much more difficult than the Egg puzzle and has a unique solution.  Precise positioning of fingers from both hands may be required to take the puzzle apart and then you still have the challenge to reassemble it paying particular attention to colour uniformity.

Each puzzle piece is made from many smaller complex shaped pieces glued together; finding the correct combination that are not glued, to push or pull to take apart, may be quite difficult.

This puzzle is hand turned in the Pelikan workshop using a selection of both European woods including  maple, walnut, birch, ash, apple, pear, cherry, oak, beech, plum, and acacia as well as some more exotic woods like mahogany, ebony, begging, wenge, walnut, American, padank, rosewood, amaranth, Bubinga, owango, jarah, meranti, and iroko.

Solution: A video on assembly and disassembly is supplied on DVD with the puzzle.

Convolution No 2 wooden ball puzzle on Stand

Convolution No 2 wooden ball puzzle on Stand

A seven piece wooden ball (koule in Czech) puzzle on a turned wooden stand.

The basis of this puzzle is the Stewart Coffin designed Convolution Cube.  Stewart made 50 from 1980 to 1983.  His design was adapted to this wonderful turned sphere version in 2007 by Jakub Dvorak.  The puzzle is rated as Demanding.  Each of the 7 pieces is made from a combination of different species and colours of wood.  The pieces are totally interlocked to make a solid sphere with a single solution.  Yes, there are no voids inside the sphere.

The bigger challenge is probably putting this puzzle back together, but in disassembly, even after you've found the first couple of pieces it still hasn't released all it's secrets.

Each puzzle piece is made from many smaller complex shaped pieces glued together; finding the correct combination that are not glued, to push or pull to take apart, may be quite difficult.

Siamese Locked Nests

Siamese Locked Nests

As at 6th December 2008 we have fifteen of these puzzle available.

LIMITED EDITION of 30 puzzles released December 2008

Stewart Coffin wrote in "Geometric Puzzle Design" that assembling a cluster of separate hexagonal sticks and dowels can be a puzzle but a more difficult and therefore more interesting puzzle will be made when some of the hexagonal sticks and dowels are joined to make elbow-shaped pieces.  The more elbows the harder the puzzle.   Stewart theorised that the maximum number of elbows that can be joined before assembly becomes impossible is half the number of each type of piece, so that's what Brian has done.

18 hexagonal sticks of varying lengths

18 dowels of varying lengths

9 hexagonal sticks and dowels joined to make elbows

Numbered as #22-B in Stewart Coffins numbering system his notes indicate at first that he thought he had only made one puzzle in 1985.  Later research would indicate that just two puzzles were ever made back in 1989 and no mention is made of how many elbows, or therefore the level of difficulty, of these.

Stewart noted that the lattice structure repeats itself indefinitely in all directions, so it would be possible to make larger assemblies with more and longer sticks and dowels.  But in reality it's not much help if you look at Stewart's notes;  Brian has built the puzzle in the reverse direction to Stewart's drawings, after all we are downunder.

The hexagonal pieces are made from: Papua New Guinean Ebony.  Whilst African Ebony is almost all black as you travel eastward around the globe the solid black reduces so by the time you come to the Pacific region the wood is a reddish brown with very prominent jet black streaks.  The dowel is made from Ramon wood.
Size: 2200mm x 170mm x 170mm  The hexagonal sticks are made from 20mm x 20mm stock.
