5 Sun 21 +1 Step Akaasa Japanese puzzle box

To open this Japanese puzzle box you must slide hidden panels in order.  There are 21 moves to make in the correct order and still this box holds one more secret.  One more move is required to find the second secret compartment.  A great way to prolong the anticipation of gift giving!

Traditional Japanese secret opening boxes were first made in the Hakone region about the 1890's by master woodworker Ryugoro Okawa and are decorated with a veneer called yosegi zaiku marquetry.  Today the youngest of the Himitsu-Bako Master craftsman is about 60 years old.  This very precise process starts with gluing different coloured woods together to form the desired pattern.  Then very thin sheets called zuku are shaved with a special plane and glued on to the puzzle.

We have sourced these boxes directly from Japan. The Hakone region has a long history of generations of master craftsmen making secret opening boxes for more than 100 years.  Our stock of these boxes is very limited and once sold we're not sure how long it will be before we could get similar puzzle boxes again.

The Hakone Mountains of Japan are noted for their great variety of trees. Hakone-Yosegi-Zaiku is a inlaid mosaic woodwork unique to this area and takes advantage of this wide variety of natural wood colors and textures to produce their elaborate geometric patterns.

The wood pattern of this box is called Akaasa.

This is a 5 Sun box.   Sun is the traditional unit of measure to denote length - 3.03cm to be exact - of these secret opening puzzle boxes.
Size outside: 150mm X 107mm X 68mm
Size inside: 100mm x 75mm x 42mm
Space inside extra compartment is really only for paper or coins or something like that. Size: 85mm x 30mm x 3mm

The puzzle box comes gift boxes in a pressboard box with lid and a solution is provided.
