Brain Strain wood and rope puzzle
The earliest known version of this puzzle was called The Ivory Lotus Puzzle and involved separating two beautifully carved pieces of ivory. It was was published as early as 1557 in Jerome Cardan's De Rerum Varietate in 1557 and is also shown in the 1801 Bestelmeier Toy Catalog.
