Mr Puzzle has just returned from attending the International Puzzle Party (IPP24) in Tokyo, Japan. Click here to see photos.

NEW puzzles Released August 2004

DECEMBURR
Available in
Standard Range or in Craftsman Range
There is an interesting sequence of 13 forward and backward moves required to disassemble this puzzle... Yes, that’s 13 moves to get the first piece out and that’s not the trickiest part of the puzzle.
Once completely apart, there are 5485 false solutions, meaning the puzzle looks like it should go together but you can’t get the last piece in. Only the specific sequence of 13 moves will allow you to insert the last piece and solve this puzzle.
Goh Pit Khiam invented this twelve piece puzzle in December 1999 without the use of a computer.
Note: We’ve given the puzzle a rating 9 out of 10 because it’s sold assembled. To solve the puzzle from a disassembled state without clues it could definitely be worthy of a rating 10!
TWISTED'S SISTER
Available in
Craftsman Range.
Another completely new design by Brian Young. Entrant IPP Design Competition 2004
The puzzle is to separate the two nails.
Presented on a Torii Gate stand in keeping with the theme of this year's International Puzzle Party held in Tokyo, Japan.
The nails are Gold plated.
ANOTHER NAILBITER - Letter Rack
Available in
Craftsman Range.
For each puzzle the object is to separate the nails. This puzzle incorporates our four DIFFERENT nail puzzles all either exclusive designs or modified from original by Mr Puzzle.
The base is fashioned so there is a 20mm opening in which to stand letters or brochures. It's made from North Queensland Rose Alder. The nails are plated in Gold.

18th August 2003

COMING OF AGE MKII Craftsman Range back in stock!

19 directional moves to remove the first piece from an 18 piece burr!
As well as our Craftsman Range this puzzle is also available in a selection of Australian hardwoods in our
Standard Range.

In 1953 Willem L van der Poel, a leading Dutch computer scientist, set out to design a puzzle with as many interlocking pieces as possible and came up with an 18 piece burr that took 4 moves to get the second last piece in and 3 more for the last piece.
In 1997 Mr Puzzle changed the burr to create a puzzle with 5 moves to get the last piece in. In 1999 he came up with this version which takes 19 moves to get the first piece out! And it doesn't finish there.... After you get the first piece out there is still 5 more moves to get the second piece out, you will then be able to easily remove the next two pieces, but watch out for the 5th. HINT... Beware when trying to remove the 5th piece - it will take you a further 9 moves - and remember no force or rotational moves are necessary to solve this puzzle.
Yes, it's so difficult you now get the puzzle assembled.
This puzzle was designed by Brian (alias Mr Puzzle) without the use of a computer.

1st June 2004

Aussie Stuff have decided to retire so whatever puzzles we have in stock is all there will ever be.
Bad news for all those lovers of their puzzles but good news for Grahame and Carol Cuthbert from Aussie Stuff.
Our thanks to them for providing so many beautifully crafted puzzles to us over the years and best wishes for a great time in retirement.

We still have quite a number of Aussie Stuff puzzles in stock but remember, once sold they will never be made again. Click here to go to the OTHER AUSSIES category.

23rd May 2004

NEW puzzles:

MAKE ROOM
Available in
Standard Range or in Craftsman Range made using 9 different Australian hardwood timbers.
In 1997 Stewart Coffin originally designed Make Room and allocated it #127 in his numbering system although only one of these puzzles was made. At IPP21 in Tokyo in 2001 a larger version of the puzzle #127-A was given by Jerry Slocum as his exchange gift. That version had 14 separate solutions to fit just nine pieces in the box.
Brian had never made a packing puzzle before.... That all changed after IPP21 when he found himself playing with Jerry's exchange puzzle for many, many hours. He then got interested in redesigning the puzzle to include a challenge with a unique solution.
The Craftsman Range puzzle presents four different challenges:
Challenge 1 - Pack all 8 blocks under the closed lid. 30 possible solutions.
Challenge 2 - Make room for all 8 blocks and the gold rod under the closed lid (not in it’s packing position). 4 solutions.
Challenge 3 - Make Room for all 8 blocks and the key (dowel) under the closed lid. Unique solution.
Challenge 4 - Can you remember how the puzzle came packaged with the key in the lid? 3 solutions.

INSOMA Available only in Craftsman Range . Your choice of three different Australian Timbers.
The puzzle is to assemble both the Soma Cube and the six piece diagonal burr at the same time. To do this you will need to find just one of the 240 different assemblies of the Soma Cube. Why? In this puzzle the Soma Cube has a unique solution. One piece of Soma Cube is attached to one of each of the pieces of the diagonal burr. When you assemble the burr you will need to assemble the Soma Cube inside it at the same time. Don’t forget you also need to fit the loose seventh piece of the Soma Cube in as well.....
The concept of putting the two puzzles together came to Brian after seeing a puzzle by Phillipe Dubois made with a loose cube assembly inside

SEARious Burr

Brian designed a brand new puzzle this year as his IPP Exchange Puzzle. He modelled a 13 piece interlocking burr after Chicago's most famous building, the Sears Tower. To increase the difficulty of the puzzle Brian then incorporated a secret lock which must be release before you can remove the first piece of the puzzle. This lock will take 13 moves to release.

Another Australian craftsman added - Robin Turner.

Robin Turner has been the creator of these sculptural puzzles since he started working with wood in 1975. Inspired by natural forms in this timeless land we call Australia such as The Olgas, Ayers Rock and other Remarkable Rocks, robin started collecting timbers from all over Australia 28 years ago and through its colour, grain and character the wood tells Robin what it want to become. Working from his studio in Aldinga, South Australia, he reflects all the ethics he lives by in his work - recycling, renewable community and above all quality.

New category of puzzles added - Designs EXCLUSIVE to Mr Puzzle.

Over the years Brian has designed a number of puzzles which are quite different to anything you will have seen elsewhere. Although some have been released as Limited Edition items which have since sold out, a number of others are part of our ongoing Standard and Craftsman ranges. We've grouped them together in their own category as well to help make it easier for you to find puzzles which you will not be able to get anywhere else.

COMING OF AGE MKII Standard Range back in stock!

DIFFICULTY RATING 10

19 directional moves to remove the first piece from an 18 piece burr!

As well as our Standard Range this puzzle is also available in a selection of Australian hardwoods in our Craftsman Range.

Patience is a Virtue back in stock.

In addition to fitting the pieces back into the rectangular frame there are 100 other shapes on the accompanying sheet to make with them.

Designed in 1899 by Richard Moller, working for A.J.Richter & Co. the Kobold puzzle was one of 36 different Anchor Puzzles manufactured between 1891 & 1964. The height of their popularity was during WW1 when they were manufactured for troops in Germany and ironically under licence by British Lotts Brick Co. for the English troops as well. The pieces were made of a mixture of Kaolin clay from Bavaria which Richter had purchased the patent for in 1882 and originally used to manufacture Anchor Stone building blocks.

PANDORA'S BOX Standard Range back in stock!

DIFFICULTY RATING 7

The puzzle is to remove the four pieces from inside the box.
Tadao Muroi (since deceased) designed this framed burr in Japan in the early 1990s and it is with the kind permission of his son we are allowed to make this puzzle.. The puzzle requires twelve sliding moves to remove the pieces from inside the box. The real puzzle may turn out to be how to get them back inside the box again using these 12 moves, although there are other combinations.

1st December 2002

10th Anniversary Limited Edition puzzles released.

Ned Kelly
Over 100 years after he was hanged the mystery of Australia’s most infamous bushranger Ned Kelly still remains unsolved.
Find Ned Kelly’s skull; it’s true whereabouts remains a mystery to this day.
To celebrate our 10th Anniversary Limited Edition range Brian has created a
completely unique design which recalls the history of Ned Kelly.
To do the puzzle you will have to follow the history of the Kelly gang's last stand. To assist we will tell the story of Ned Kelly's Last Stand on the Limited Edition certificate you will receive with the puzzle.
You will need to solve ten different puzzles to discover the tools incorporated in the puzzle. You will require these tools along the way to complete the puzzle.
The puzzle will also be quite a challenge to reassemble becasue every piece in the puzzle is different and interlocking.
Ned is presented in Queensland Blackbean. Queensland Blackbean grows throughout eastern Australia and is also known as Moreton Bay Bean or Moreton Bay Chestnut.

Puzzlers Cage
The puzzle is to assemble/disassemble the 24 piece interlocking burr.
This burr is extemely interlocking; it even interlocks around the ends of some of the pieces which is very unusual.
Junichi Yananose designed this burr in 1999 without the use of a computer and in his own words describes it as "a crazy difficult burr puzzle".
This puzzle has been so rarely made that even Junichi does not own a copy of this puzzle, although he has already reserved one from this Limited Edition releases.
Puzzler's Cage is presented in Queensland Maple (which like many native Australian timbers is not really from the maple family). Also known as Maple Silkwood this timber is from the Rutaceae family.

Russian 13
Make the 3x3 interlocking cube.
The puzzle again comes from the book by russian author Leonid Mochalov called "400 Tricks and Games".
Mr Puzzle himself found this puzzle quite tricky to put together; you can make it more difficult by not taking any hints from the photo of the assembled puzzle.
From our own computer analysis there are six different solutions; see if you can find them all.
The puzzle is crafted from Australian Blackwood, also known as Black Wattle.

October 2002

We've added another Product Category to present puzzles from Other Aussies - other Australian craftsmen producing high quality puzzles.

DIFFICULTY RATING 7
Brian designed this puzzle to be presented as his Exchange Gift at the International Puzzle Party in Antwerpen, Belgium in August 2002.
Use all seven pieces to make the letter L
Use all seven pieces to make the letter T
The real challenge is to use all seven pieces to make the letters L and T at the same time.

Covered by Australian Design Registration No 149028.

JUST A LITTLE PACKING PROBLEM #1

DIFFICULTY RATING 6
Researched by Stewart T. Coffin, one of the most prolific puzzle inventors ever, for his book "The Puzzling World of Polyhedral Dissections" - this is just one of the variations of the "Patio Block" puzzle using a series of 1x2x2 dimensioned blocks joined in groups of 2 to form a 4x4x4 cube.

MEGA SIX

DIFFICULTY RATING 9
Bill Cutler first used a computer program to analyse six piece burrs in 1974 but it took until 1990 to analyse all possible six piece burr combinations.
Mega Six is the result of that search for the maximum number of moves for a six piece burr with a unique solution. This does not mean it has a unique assembly, due to the number of internal voids. In theory the pieces should fit together in 20 different ways however, the reality is that you can physically only put the puzzle together in one of the 20 assemblies.
Not only OUR hardest six piece burr but THE hardest six piece burr!
As well as our Standard Range this puzzle is also available in a selection of Australian hardwoods in our Craftsman Range.
Covered by Australian Design Registration Application No 498/2002.
