Details

Flyte is a levitating light which hovers by magnetic levitation and is powered through the air.

So what's the puzzle? Perhaps it's not really a puzzle; but it’s a very puzzling object that’s for sure.

It could be considered a dexterity puzzle; it certainly requires patience and a steady hand when you're first learning how to get to levitate. But mostly the puzzle is just to try and understand how it works. Mostly it's just a very cool light that is an amazingly stylish and impressive object to have in your home!

Does it really levitate?  YES.  You can even pass a non-metallic object such as paper through the gap to show off to your friends.

The Flyte Light is a lightbulb that relies on electromagnetism to levitate and spin, and on resonant inductive coupling — a technical term for wireless power transmission - to shine.  Believe it or not, Nikola Tesla first discovered resonant coupling around the turn of the 20th century. In theory we could have been using wireless power ever since, if only Nikola Tesla had ousted the DC cabled technology of his rival Thomas Edison way back when.  Now Flyte is doing its bit to cut the cords in our homes; using wireless power just like Nikola Tesla tried to do before his rival Thomas Edison won the war of the currents.

The base is made from a sustainably-sourced quarter sawn Walnut wood. The bulb features an Edison style borosilicate glass bulb, a 7 LED star-shaped filament, a Chrome cap and an aluminium ring. The bulb is an energy efficient LED rated at about 50,000 hours; that's 12 hours a day for 11 years! It does not need any batteries; it is powered through the air via induction. The power source to the base is Global Voltage Compatible: 100 - 240V.

If it is your first time, expect that it may take numerous attempts.  As you gain experience, you will be able to levitate your Flyte Bulb every time effortlessly. For your first time, or even first few times, you might want to use the Flyte Co-Pilot tool which is designed to make the levitation process even easier as well as protecting the base while you perfect your skill.

The Flyte Light won TIME Magazine's Best Inventions of 2016 and has since been listed in GQ Magazine's 60 Coolest things in the world right now.

The inventor of Flyte Light is Simon Morris. Founder and CEO of Flyte. The company is based in Sweden and their profile states that "Flyte are a small team of creatives, engineers, designers and artists who met in Sweden. Our goal is to create intelligent and inspiring products with the absolute WOW factor.  With a background in branding, communication and product design, Flyte creates products and experiences that captivate the imagination combining vintage design with innovative techniques."

Well Flyte Light certain has that.  WOW!

Simon says he "plays with sound, matter and energy and their relationships with gravity to absolute wow affect. Projects such as Musique, Concrete (an interactive musical skateboard), Nike Air Max 1 Reinvented (a magnetically levitating Nike sneaker) and Invitation au Voyage (a magnetically hovering skateboard) are great examples of his game. In short, Simon has turned floating things in space into a beautiful profession."
