Metal Puzzles

The 9 Linked Rings (often called the Chinese Ring puzzle) is said to date back to the Song dynasty (960-1129). It could be the earliest known metal puzzle ever. And still it's being enjoyed (well, at least puzzled over!) by people today. You'll find it and many, many other metal puzzles in this category.

When we think of metal puzzles many of us think of small wire puzzles where you need to disentangle the two interlinked parts. And there are many examples of these types of puzzles in our online shop. But there are many other types of puzzles made in metal too.

Metal is a very exact medium to work in and puzzles often need that exactness to ensure they work correctly so the two fit very well together. And metal is strong. As a general rule (with the exception of a very few specific instructions in particular puzzles) we say you are not supposed to use force to separate part of a puzzle. But what if the frustration just gets to you? Most metal puzzles will probably survive a little bit rougher treatment than puzzles made of other materials. We do not however condone tossing them out the window out of sheer frustration!!!

These days there are many mechanical puzzle categories where metal is used to make the puzzles. Cast metal puzzles that you disentangle, metal maze type puzzles, puzzle locks, puzzle bolts, and very high end engineered take apart and sequential discovery puzzles.  And here at Mr Puzzle you'll find them all.

One of the biggest names in metal puzzles these days is Hanayama. They're bringing out new designs to challenge our thinking every year across six different degrees of difficulty. And puzzle lovers want to collect them all. You'll need persistence to figure out how to disassemble their mechanisms. Maybe by rotating, sliding and some other manipulation the cast metal pieces will come apart but one thing is for sure, they'll keep you puzzling for hours.

Wil Strijbos is another puzzle inventor and maker who uses the precision of metal to make puzzles that really test the cognitive processes of the puzzler. He is a small volume manufacturer concentrating on smaller quantities of very precisely engineered aluminum puzzles. People are very prepared to wait a long time for the chance to get a Wil Strijbos puzzle!

Metal has been used for some of the oldest puzzles we know too. The Chinese Ring Puzzle (aka The Nine Linked Rings), probably China's most famous puzzle ever was proven by Stewart Culin (an American ethnographer 1858-1929) to have been invented by the Chinese general Hung Ming in the 2nd century AD.

From contemporary to historical, fun to very difficult, inexpensive to high end precision, if you're thinking about building your metal puzzle collection then look no further than Mr Puzzle. At any one time we've usually got more than 50 different types of metal puzzle on the website.
