Many of the puzzles in this category will also present a challenge for most adults!
We’re introduced to puzzles from an early age and learn to love playing with them right away. But as well as being just great fun, puzzles challenge how we think; they are really good exercise for our minds. Puzzles come in different themes. Yes, there’s numbers and letters. But also animals, maps, cars and any number of other topics.
Immediately there’s another element of interest for kids. Not just the solving of the puzzle but the visual stimulation of a subject that interests them. All kids learn differently and puzzles can be one way for some to grasp and understand the alphabet or develop other cognitive skills.
Puzzles really give kids a pathway to learning problem solving skills while they don’t even really know that’s what they’re doing. Even the easiest puzzles set a goal to achieve to complete the puzzle. And even the youngest child needs to develop a strategy or an approach on how to achieve that goal. These problem solving skills can then be used later in life.
Fine motor skills is another area where children can develop an essential skill just by picking up, moving around, putting in place or manipulating into slots different puzzle pieces, all while they’re engaged in solving the puzzle and having fun.
Kids can work together to complete puzzles. It’s a great way to promote cooperative play, sharing, taking turns and helping each other. They can also share the achievement of completing the puzzle when it’s done. The sense of achievement can bring great satisfaction and pride.
All in all puzzles can be educational for young minds, but mostly they are just fun!
