This 14 step puzzle box is curious and unusual in the world of himitsu-bako, commonly called Japanese puzzle boxes for a couple of reasons.
It’s square.
That’s uncommon amongst Japanese Secret Opening Boxes.
It’s not fashioned from the standard Yosegi wood marquetry pattern.
The top and bottom panels of the box are made of 4 different kinds of naturals wood from the Hakone area and the side panels are made from Walnut wood that Hiroyuki sourced from North America to make this special version.
The four kinds of wood used in the top and bottom are: White-Mizuki (English name: Dogwood), Yellow – Urushi (English name: Lacquer wood), Green/Grey – Hoo (English name: Magnolia) & Red – Gluta Renghas wood. These are the natural colour of the woods and they have not been painted.
To open a Japanese Puzzle Box, you need to find the first panel that you can slide either side to side or up and down. This will then free up another piece to be able to move. And then another… and another…. until you’ve made all 14 moves in the correct order. Sometimes panels may be divided into sections so only part of a panel will move. This, and the accuracy of the workmanship and pattern, make identifying each panel incredibly difficult.

The puzzle box is made from wood by Hiroyuki Oka in his own workshop in Hakone where he’s been making puzzle boxes since 2003.  He served a 10 year apprenticeship before that to be judged a master craftsman.

Different to many traditional Japanese puzzle boxes, this box is square. The actual size outside: 78mm X 78mm X 50mm  Size inside: 62mm X 39mm X 35mm
Packaged in a white pressboard gift box with a distinctive mauve sayagata patterned lid with some small gold and silver leaf flecks.  It has a printed solution inside.
