That’s uncommon amongst Japanese Secret Opening Boxes.
The top and bottom panels of the box are made of 4 different kinds of naturals wood from the Hakone area and the side panels are made from Walnut wood that Hiroyuki sourced from North America to make this special version.
The four kinds of wood used in the top and bottom are: White-Mizuki (English name: Dogwood), Yellow – Urushi (English name: Lacquer wood), Green/Grey – Hoo (English name: Magnolia) & Red – Gluta Renghas wood. These are the natural colour of the woods and they have not been painted.
The puzzle box is made from wood by Hiroyuki Oka in his own workshop in Hakone where he’s been making puzzle boxes since 2003. He served a 10 year apprenticeship before that to be judged a master craftsman.
Different to many traditional Japanese puzzle boxes, this box is square. The actual size outside: 78mm X 78mm X 50mm Size inside: 62mm X 39mm X 35mm
Packaged in a white pressboard gift box with a distinctive mauve sayagata patterned lid with some small gold and silver leaf flecks. It has a printed solution inside.
