In mid 2009 the Dutch puzzle inventor Oskar van Deventer first showed a puzzle on YouTube called Caution Cube. The story goes that he called it that because once while he was turning this new cube puzzle his finger got caught and the gears of the puzzle hurt; a lot! With Oskar’s truly wicked sense of humour we saw him in his next YouTube wearing all the safety gear; gloves; glasses; the lot! Must have been tricky to turn that puzzle in all that kit.
This was the start of a number of geared puzzles. Not only The Gear Cube like this one, but also the Gear Ball, Gear Pyramid and more. Oskar had worked with Bram Cohen on an idea he had for a new type of Rubik’s or Twisty cube where all the pieces around the edges are cogs and they turn when the outer layers are moved. This also means that when you turn the outer layers you affect the middle layer by a quarter of a turn as well due to the cogs and wheels that link them together.
Ingenious. Revolutionary. A totally new idea. The Twisty world was abuzz with news of this new invention!
The way to solve this cube is similar to the Rubiks Cube; you move up, down, left, right, front and back. Only when you start moving it you see how it changes shape very dramatically. Then it really starts to scare you.
Oskar and Bram have collaborated many times to create mechanical puzzles of many different varieties. These include ThinkFun’s Fidgitz puzzle also available on this website. Another new and different structure of twisty puzzle, this one does not resemble a Rubik’s cube at all.
Despite this being a budget version of the puzzle, and the craziest of gear shaped interlocking pieces, this cube turns very smoothly. It’s pre-lubed before it leaves the factory.
This version has Black background WITH stickers – white, green, yellow, orange, blue and red stickers.
