Designed in the USA and printed in Australia. The Sam Loyd Company was founded by Sam Loyd in 1892 to produce his many inventions. When he passed away in 1911, it was inherited by his son, Sam Loyd Junior, who continued to run it until his own death in 1934. Today, that same company is responsible for promoting, educating, publishing, distributing and protecting the work and legacies of both Sam Loyd and Sam Loyd Junior.

Sam Loyd (1842-1911) was a controversial character.  He is widely acknowledged as one of America’s great puzzle designers although he wasn’t always the most honest. He’s well known for starting the 15 Puzzle craze of the 1880’s and claiming the puzzle was his idea and you can still find him credited with the invention all over the internet today. He was not the inventor. That was Noyes Chapman, who applied for a patent in March 1880.
Another example of Sam Loyd’s less than ethical behaviour can be seen in his publication of The Eighth Book Of Tan in 1908. A book of seven hundred unique Tangram designs and a fanciful history of the origin of the Tangram, claiming that the puzzle was invented 4,000 years ago by a god named Tan. This was presented as true and has been described as “Sam Loyd’s Most Successful Hoax”.

As far as we know he did design all the puzzles printed in these books.
