This puzzle evolved from an idea by William Hu for an “Anti-Slide” puzzle. With some tweaking by Junichi Yananose and Brian Young here at Mr Puzzle a puzzle was made for Jerry Slocum to present at the Edward Hordern Puzzle exchange at IPP in Paris held August 2017.
The stated object of the puzzle is: Place all 6 pieces in the frame with the car engraving up, so that no piece can slide within the frame; even when the frame is shaken side to side.
Since then we’ve added other challenges for you as well based on emails we’ve received from puzzlers proposing different solutions from those we had initially intended; some very good, some very imaginative, others that are just plain hopeful! But that’s what it’s all about. Working with others’ ideas and taking the puzzle to it’s limits!
But we’ve also added new “rules” to constrain some of the wildest ideas proposed.
When the puzzle is solved there should be slight movement of the pieces in the frame but they will not slide freely around the frame. When briskly shaken they will not slip and slide loosely around the frame. There will be some movement though just because of the variation in the cast acrylic pieces.
Jamming the pieces into the frame using force is not the intended solution. Like most puzzles, force is not the answer.
A really nice playable puzzle! https://www.mrpuzzle.com.au/arc-de-triomphe-ipp-puzzle.html
