2D Put Together
Dissection puzzles. Tray Puzzles.
Not really jigsaw puzzles although you may still have to match a pattern or picture to complete the puzzle, the pieces usually do not interlock. To complete the puzzle you will need to fill a pre-defined space with the pieces of the puzzle and often conform to a pattern as well.
A brainteaser called Stomachion, the so-called problem that “drives you mad!” – was created by the Greeks in about the 3rd century BC. It was a 14 piece dissection of a square and legend has it was played with, and possibly invented by, Archimedes. Tangrams are a later example (later we say, yet they’ve been known to the Chinese for many centuries!) of this same type of 2D dissection or put-together puzzle.
