Such puzzles are often called Ring-String-Ball puzzles. They’ve been around for over 100 years! He wrote “when a string is used, the key is generally to be found in a loop which can be drawn over a knot or ball. This maneuver of moving a small part in order to release a larger component is useful in all ring-string-ball puzzles.”
