There are more elements to opening this puzzle box than just sliding the panels. First you will have to release the lock that stops the panels from sliding.  Even when you’ve done that there’s still a number of steps to open the puzzle box. There is more than 1 compartment in the box to open.

Wei Zhang and her husband Peter Rasmussen have been collecting Chinese puzzles since 1997. They even have a website dedicated to it which is quite interesting  They are trying to research as much history of Chinese puzzles as they can. They have found an amazing amount of information about more famous Chinese puzzles like the Tangram and the Chinese 9 linked rings but until recently information about the history of Chinese puzzle boxes has been more elusive. Then they began traveling around Shanxi province in 1999 and found many examples of clever boxes, no two alike, in rural markets. They were not commercially made but rather a functional item used by households to hold property deeds and other valuables.

These days Mi-Toys in China is making modern puzzle boxes so that people can enjoy the challenge of opening a puzzle box, and it's quite fun to hide a present inside and then give the box to the recipient!

The puzzle box is made from stained wood with lovely oriental lattice decoration on top and a Chinese saying on the side “rather break unyielding” which is a reflection of how they view the majestic pine tree.

At Mr Puzzle we have opened every one of these boxes to add our own additional explanations to the original solution sheet from the manufacturer in China and in the process we have checked the box works as expected.
